Genital Acne
You will find that in most cases of what is considered to be genital acne, is not exactly genital acne. What most of us think of genital acne is actually a medical condition known as Hidradenitis Suppurativa. The main reason for this confusion is because of the similar visible appearance between the two conditions. However, there are differences between the two conditions.
If you do not already know, acne is caused by the excess secretion of sebum by the sebaceous glands while Hidradenitis Suppurativa is a result of the apocrine glands. Apocrine glands are present in the groin area, the area under the arms and the nipples. As is the case with acne, the main reason for Hidradenitis Suppurativa is over perspiration in these areas and the glands being blocked.
There are also some cases where the apocrine glands do not develop completely. In these cases, what happens is that the glands become clogged and the materials inside cannot be excreted. This material forces it way into the surrounding tissues of the blocked gland, giving the appearance of genital acne. What often results is infection and inflammation in the area of infection, which sometimes develops into lesions on the surface of the skin.
This condition can also be caused because of irritation in the groin area. This irritation can be caused by tight clothing rubbing against the skin or the type of laundry detergent used to wash clothes. If you experience this type of problem, you can try changing your detergent or your body soap and see what happens. If the problem vanishes, your body is having a negative reaction to the detergent or soap and you should discontinue using that type.
If you find that your problem persists or worsens, and especially if lesions appear on the genital organs, consult a doctor. It's possible that genital acne could be a symptom of some serious illness. It could also be symptom of a sexually transmitted disease such as warts or genital herpes, and may not be related to having blocked apocrine glands at all. In most cases of Hidradenitis Suppurativa that get out of hand, the patient does not feel comfortable in visiting a doctor. It is essential that you consult a doctor the moment you feel your condition is worsening, and there is no need to feel embarrassed or ashamed. It is a medical problem requiring a medical diagnosis to cure your problem of genital acne.
If your doctor makes the diagnosis that it is Hidradenitis Suppurativa, and it’s mild, it can be easily treated. The doctor may ask you to change the way you wear your clothes, such as wearing loose clothing. You will also need to keep the affected area free from bacteria and other infection by cleaning it with antiseptic, or hydrogen or benzyl peroxide solution. If there is discharge coming from any lesions, or if the lesions are painful, the doctor might prescribe you antibiotics. In severe cases, the lesion may have to be drained.
You should now have a better understanding of what is considered to be genital acne, the causes behind it and the proper treatment.
